At Niskayuna Animal Hospital we are committed to providing a high level of safety and care before, during, and after your pet’s surgical procedure. Prior to surgery, all patients undergo a complete physical examination and are carefully screened to reduce the risk of anesthesia related complications. Pre-surgery pain medication is administered which, research has shown, significantly reduces the level of pain the patient experiences post-operatively. Pain medication also adds greater comfort and has been shown to increase healing.

Prior to anesthesia, an intravenous catheter is placed which permits the safe injection of fluids and anesthetic drugs. The catheter also acts as a direct port in the event life-saving drugs need to be administered by the surgical team. To ensure adequate breathing during the procedure, an endotracheal tube is used. Your canine or feline friend will receive fluids during the surgery to ensure proper blood pressure and hydration. They will also be closely monitored by a licensed veterinary technician during the surgery. The doctor and technician use monitoring devices that measure blood pressure, heart rate, ECG, and oxygen saturation.

Your animal family member will be kept warm by our heated surgery table. Once in recovery, they are kept comfortable with blankets and continually monitored until awake. The technician administers pain medication, food, water, and takes them on bathroom breaks as soon as the patients are able.

Pain relief after any surgical procedure has a profound impact on how well our patients recover and heal. It also significantly affects their attitude and activity once they return home. When it is time for your pet to go home we will give you written discharge instructions and address any questions or concerns you may have about the surgery, including the effects of anesthesia, pain management, and postoperative care.
